1/6 Update to Out-of-School Activities Policy

Ginny Colwell
Dear Parents and Guardians:

On December 17, we sent a communication to our community concerning the rationale behind our publicized policy for out-of-school activities. The PVI Administration determined that we needed to look at risk reduction strategies, take a step back, and pause due to the COVID cases among our students, especially involving activities outside "the PVI bubble."

The policy was to be a re-set, a period to see where the case numbers continue to take us (up or down) and a time to evaluate a way to be able to offer academics while allowing extracurricular activities for our students. This policy was not meant to be a long-term solution, simply a time out.

Our COVID Concerns Committee met on January 4 and, after research from a variety of experts in the area and looking at numbers and patterns, it is our determination that we return to students being able to participate in out-of-school activities while still continuing to attend school on their hybrid days.

We have been in contact with DMV athletic directors, coaches and others responsible for sports programs as well as other outside activities, and reviewed the protections that appear to have been universally adopted by the outside organizations of which our students are a part; and, we feel that the necessary screening protocols exist to provide for the safety of the student participants.

The COVID Concerns Committee recommended, and the Administration will implement, the following:
  1. All students may participate in out-of-school activities if the activities have in place COVID-19 screening and prevention protocols equal to, or stricter than, those implemented at PVI.

  2. However, without express permission from the Administration, participating in an activity outside of Washington, D.C., Maryland or Virginia will require a student to study virtually and refrain from in-person PVI activities for 10 days. Please contact Mrs. Colwell for express permission.
Please understand that due to the fluid nature of the pandemic, the Administration may make further modifications to this policy. In addition, unique circumstances may impact the application of this policy. Accordingly, the Administration, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to apply the policy on a case-by-by case basis.

We will reformat the COVID Health Screening Form to reflect this change. Please look for the updated form later this week by email. We ask that everyone continue to reference the screening form before sending students to school.

The Administration has tried to find a balance between mitigating risk, offering in-person instruction, allowing students to participate in activities, and protecting the health of all in the PVI community. We ask that we all continue to be vigilant to protect each of us.

This change goes into effect immediately and we look forward to seeing all hybrid students on their assigned days starting on Monday, January 11.
