7/30 From the Head of School -- Phase 3 Academic Plan & Travel

Ginny Colwell
Dear PVI,

As we prepare to start the 2020-2021 school year, we have submitted the Return to School Health Mitigation Plan, Phase 3 - Academic Year for St. Paul VI Catholic High School to our governing body, Virginia Council on Private Education (VCPE). It had been previously approved by the Diocese and the Superintendent for the Office of Catholic Schools, Dr. Joseph Vorbach.

This plan contains what we are doing to open our campus to our students. Some areas include:
  • Entrance Procedures
  • Maintaining Social Distancing and Healthy Behaviors
  • Classroom Procedures
  • Procedures Should Someone Get Sick and Closure Procedures
  • Other pertinent information
It is not our Student Handbook, which students will receive during Orientation. But it is something that we all need to read and keep as a handy reference.

Much of the plan has been dictated by the Commonwealth and CDC guidelines and every attempt has been made for it to be all encompassing and to anticipate any questions. That being said, if you have a question that does not seem to be answered, please let us know. Next week, we will be posting a Frequently Asked Questions resource on our website, as well as sending it by email. We will continue to update these FAQs as we get closer to the beginning of the school year.

One of the ways that PVI will help in the effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 within the school is by having employees perform a daily self-health check and prohibit their reporting to work if they answer YES to any of the screening questions. Our staff is already doing that and when the faculty returns, they will be required to respond to the screening questions also.

Each family will need to participate in this effort by having our students do the same. The Campus Entrance Questionnaire, Appendix C, in the Health Mitigation Plan has recently been revised to include questions that pertain to travel outside of the DC Metropolitan area by plane, bus or train, and travel to any state classified by the Harvard Global Health Institute as having a risk level of "red."

Please review this questionnaire so you can be prepared and can consider the implications of any travel planned for the two weeks prior to the start of school. If the answer is YES to questions 9 - 11, faculty, staff and students are expected to quarantine and not report to campus for 14 days from the date of travel.

As a reminder, Student Orientation will be held August 24 -- 28 on campus in small groups and the first day of school is August 31.

The safety of everyone who enters the building is paramount in all of our minds. Many people have worked all summer to get our new home ready to safely welcome our students. We ask that in these final days of summer we all work toward the goal of safety and good health for all of PVI.
