10/18 Virginia Remains in Phase 3

Ginny Colwell
Dear Parents,

I hope all is well with your family as we continue to face this pandemic. Your students have been wonderful; and while they continue to do all that we ask, I would appreciate a little more social distancing on the stairs! I know they are praying for the time when we can all be back together under one roof.

I have heard from many how excited your students are to come to school - even getting up early and being thrilled to put on their uniforms. But the flip side is another story when they are home for two days.

We have talked in our administration meetings about how we can bring more students into the building. Each time we run up against the COVID occupancy limit. The Commonwealth of Virginia remains in Phase 3 and we must follow the Governor's Executive Order for Phase Guidance for Virginia Schools.

The guiding principles in the Phase Guidance for Virginia Schools ranks risk as lowest risk, more risk, or highest risk. PVI falls into the "more risk" category. Our enhanced cleaning protocols, along with everyone wearing masks, washing hands, using hand sanitizer, practicing social distancing and avoiding coming to the building if sick, are changes we made knowing our risk level.

For Mass, we make sure we split the students to abide by the 250 person limit. The additional lunch period has helped provide adequate space in the Dining Commons, which will become even more vital as the weather gets too cold to eat outside.

We have discussed the logistics of bringing in a full grade at a time; however, while the classrooms look spacious in photos, putting 24 students in a classroom makes it impossible to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

By your diligence in completing the Daily Health Screening, you have kept all our students safe and protected the health of our teachers and staff. We are proud that we have had no cases in the building in the seven weeks we have been open. Our success thus far cannot tempt us to let our guard down and fully open before it is safe to do so.

We know that many of you want your students back in the building full time. So do we. We must do so in a safe way and when the time is right.
