8/15 Fall Plan for Athletics 2020

Billy Emerson, Athletic Director
Dear PVI Panther Nation,

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) fall sports seasons have officially been postponed. Our conference and our state association are both developing scheduling options for all sports, with a likely start date in December 2020 or January 2021. This delay will affect the length of each sports season to varying degrees, as well as the order of all three seasons. The WCAC and VISAA are comprised of dozens of schools spanning different states, counties, and jurisdictions. While the decision was made that there will be no WCAC or VISAA sanctioned contest, event, or championships for the fall of 2020 - member schools will be permitted to continue with sports activities this fall that meet the safety requirements of their specific location.

Here is what this means for PVI Sports:

1. We will continue to offer “conditioning & skill sessions” for all fall sports teams through Labor Day Weekend. As we fully open our new campus, there will be a schedule reduction of these activities during the weeks of August 24 (student orientation) and August 31 (first week of classes). All Covid-19 safety procedures and requirements will remain in place (including the daily screening form). All participating coaches have completed Covid-19 safety training and will continue to manage and instruct participating student-athletes on the Covid-19 safety protocols and requirements. For specific team schedules: contact the head coach of the program. Contact information can be found under each sport listed at pvisports.net. Conditioning & skill sessions are optional.

2. We will resume fall sports “conditioning & skill sessions” on September 8th, with a new “after school schedule” in place. We are also preparing to safely open the weight room by mid-September and we are exploring options to allow preseason “conditioning and skill sessions” for winter and spring sports teams by October. Again, all Covid-19 safety procedures and requirements will remain in place.

3. We will begin tryouts and practices for an independent, modified fall sports season on (or around) September 21. The following sports will be offered to our students:

  • Boys & Girls Cross Country
  • Field Hockey
  • Boys & Girls Soccer
  • Girl Tennis
  • Girls Volleyball

We are exploring possibilities for modified activities for Football and Options Soccer.
We are examining a potential seasonal shift for Cheer and Dance.

Our hope is to begin competitions with select local schools on weekends in early October, and continue into November. Plans for exact schedules (practices and competitions), fans, etc. are still a work in progress. Please note that all plans are subject to change pending health recommendations by any and all of our governing bodies.

Requirements:

  • Beginning August 24: All student-athletes must have a current physical on file before they will be allowed to participate in any further athletic activity. Paul VI will not be offering Physical Exams.
  • Any competition that takes place in the fall will NOT be sanctioned by the WCAC/VISAA nor count towards WCAC/VISAA play. Competitions will be considered scrimmages and will not count against the official fall season to be played later in the school year.
  • All programs participating in fall workouts, conditioning & skill sessions, practices, and competitions must follow and adhere to all WCAC, VISAA, and school policies.
  • No competitions will be held during the weekdays (Monday-Thursday).
  • Transportation for activities and competitions will NOT be provided by PVI during this modified fall period.

All Covid-19 protocols that are currently in place for PVI Sports will remain in place for this modified fall period. Anyone who cannot adhere to rules for safety, particularly physical distancing and mask requirements will not be allowed to participate. Our athletic training staff will continue to work with the state health department on safety protocols and requirements for quarantine should we have a positive case of Covid-19. They will be the point of contact with families for any health concerns.

The role of extracurricular activity is very important in the development of our students. Safety is the number one goal in this process, while the mental and emotional health of our student-athletes is also of paramount concern. We have worked very hard to provide these opportunities for our community. We have been successfully running conditioning & skill sessions for our student-athletes, as well as various sports camps since late June. We have proven that we can provide the best structure and care to allow our kids to SAFELY participate in sports. We are unwaveringly committed to protecting the health of our student-athletes and coaches. Participation is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged if you feel comfortable engaging in any PVI sports activities during this modified fall period.

Sports Physicals

All student-athletes should have their sports physicals completed now (even if they play a winter or spring sport) and mailed to our campus in Chantilly. These physical forms should be dated by the medical professional after June 1, 2020 (physicals done in May 2020 are acceptable). Please do not send Immunization Records or the 4-Part Form to Athletics. The school nurse keeps all IRs and the 4-Part form is given directly to your coach to grant certain permissions and record contact information.

Please use the following address to mail the sports physical:
