7/21: From the Head of School -- Academic Plan

Ginny Colwell
Dear PVI,

Thank you for your patience as we have worked to determine the best reopening plan for our school community. We have been challenged to develop a safe reopening plan for a new building as we were moving into it. To say it has been interesting is an understatement.

You have reached out through emails and phone calls; and your comments and concerns have been heard. After careful consideration, PVI will enter the 2020-2021 school year with a hybrid model of in-person and virtual, synchronous learning.

For the 2020-2021 school year, PVI will utilize a block schedule. We will use synchronous learning with 50% of the students in the building and 50% joining in the class from home. All students are expected to attend all classes in "real time" (in-person and remotely). Groups will be formed alphabetically by last name: A-K and L-Z (adjustments may be made to ensure 50% occupancy). We will have four lunch times (A, B, C, and D) to accommodate lunches and social distancing in our dining commons.

Rotating Block Schedule

Our PANTHERS cycle provides 8 days of instruction. In school instruction during the cycle is 4 days out of 8. Over the course of 8 days, students will receive 50% face-to-face instruction.

An individual full-time distance learning option will be available for all families with students who are unable or do not wish to return to campus at this time.  Students who are unable to return to campus, for whatever reason, will follow the schedule at home with their respective alpha group. Parents who wish to enroll their student in the full-time distance learning option are asked to notify the school by August 5, 2020, by sending an email request to headofschool@pvipanther.net
Much more information will come when we publish our Return to School Health Mitigation Plan, Phase III---Academic Year in the next week or so. All of your questions should find answers in this plan.

For more planning purposes:
  • Monday, August 24 - August 28: Student Orientation (mornings only and all in-person)

  • Monday, August 31: First Day of Classes
It was our hope to have all in-person, five-days a week instruction and we analyzed that possibility very closely. Ultimately, however, bringing over 950 students into the building at one time is not safe at this time. While we have a beautiful and very large new building, social distancing is going to take time to establish and doing this with 50% of our students will keep students and faculty safe.

We ask for your continued prayers, as you receive ours, during these unprecedented times.

Mrs. Ginny Colwell
