Welcome to the Academic Support Program

ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAM (ASP)

The Academic Support Program at Paul VI is designed to meet the needs of those students who may experience difficulty with the transition to high school or with its ongoing academic demands. The program’s primary purpose is to equip students with organizational skills and study skills needed for success in high school. The program fosters student self-advocacy and student personal responsibility for assignments and grades. ASP also provides positive reinforcement and encouragement to build student self-esteem.

Parents may request that a student enroll in this program. Students attend ASP daily during their scheduled study period. Students receive individual and small group instruction. The program is staffed by experienced teachers who have training in academic subjects and in services to students with special needs. ASP teachers monitor student academic progress and serve as liaisons between students, teachers, and parents.

Success in the Academic Support Program depends on the student’s attitude and willingness to work at improving his or her skills. This involves student cooperation with ASP and content area teachers as well as student commitment of time and effort at home with parental supervision. If a student is unwilling to participate in the study skill activities in ASP and to accept teacher support, the ASP teacher and the Paul VI administration may determine that ASP is not an appropriate placement.

There is a $ 100 (one time) registration fee and a $ 1,125 per semester tuition for the Academic Support Program. Financial assistance is available through the school’s regular tuition assistance program. Students must commit to the program for the full semester. ASP tuition is non-refundable.

The PVI Admissions Office may require that a 9th grade student enroll in ASP for two consecutive semesters. It is assumed that a 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student will be re-enrolled in ASP for a second semester unless a parent requests that a student be withdrawn. Parents must notify the Director of Special Programs by mid-December or mid-May of their decision to withdraw their child from ASP. After that time parents will be billed for a second semester.
