Background

Established by the Diocese of Arlington and founded by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1983, Paul VI Catholic High School is a college preparatory high school dedicated to maintaining a rigorous liberal arts curriculum that challenges students to reach their highest intellectual potential. Paul VI Catholic High School graduates go on to distinguished college careers at select colleges, universities, and military academies in the United States.

School Mission Statement

The mission of Paul VI Catholic High School is to provide an excellent Catholic edu cation to young menand women by affording them the means to achieve spiritual, intellectual, pers onal, social and physical development according to the teachings of the Gospel and St. Fr ancis de Sales. Paul VI Catholic High School is committed to graduating responsible, moral, service o riented young adults who will continue to “Grow in Grace and Wisdom.”

Academic Program

Paul VI’s academic program strongly prepares students to write on the c ollege level. The literature based English curriculum emphasizes the development of writing skills at all grade and course levels. During freshman year teachers concentrate on developing and supporting a thesis statement in an analytical essay. Students also complete numerous other writing assignments. Re search writing skills are added sophomore year with an emphasis on properly citing sources usin g MLA format. Writing continues throughout both the junior and senior years, culminating each y ear in a major research project. In addition, students complete required writing and research assig nments across the curriculum in social studies, science, theology, world languages and physical education classes.

Our school’s required theology curriculum is based squarely upon the curri culum advanced in 2008 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for Catholic h igh schools throughout the country. Working within the scope of this curriculum, the theology curric ulum develops and hones the student’s critical thinking skills as they explore the Catholic Faith thr ough a progression of academic courses.

Science at Paul VI blends lecture and project based learning. Students utilize science, technology, engineering, and math skills to solve problems. Our Biosafety L evel 2 laboratory facility and supporting equipment provide the capability of safely conducting microbiol ogical experiments. Paul VI offers cyberscience electives in microbiology and genetics that combin e online lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions. Science is at the head of our dual enrollm ent initiative. Paul VI is privileged to be partnered with Northern Virginia Community College to offer dual enrollment science courses.

Courses are offered on five levels with the exception of theology , social science, electives and required computer courses. The average number of academic courses a student takes per seme ster is 7 (minimum is 6; maximum is 8).

Advanced Placement Courses (19) are offered in, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Comparative Government & Politics, Computer Science A, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Com position, Environmental Science, European History, French Language, Latin, Macroeconomics, Psychology, Physics B, Spanish Language, Statistics, Studio Art: Drawing, United States Government and Politics, and United States History.

Dual Enrollment Courses (4) are available to juniors and seniors through Northern Virginia Community College. Students must meet the COMPASS Test requirements set by NOVA. Courses offered this year are Intermediate German (GER 201 & 202), College Composition (E NG 111 & 112), Music Appreciation (MUS 121), and Biology with Lab (BIO 101 & 102).

Honors Courses (32) are for students capable of advanced learning and working independently. Honors Courses are offered in computer science, English, world language (levels 3 and 4), social studies, mathematics and science.

College Prep Courses are designed to develop skills and knowledge to succeed in higher education.

General Courses (19) offer differential instruction in a smaller class size.

  • Starting with the school year 2011-2012, Honors English 12 and Honors U.S. Government are no longer offered in favor of AP English Literature and AP U.S. Government.
  • Honors and Advanced Placement courses have restricted enrollment based on overall cumulative GPA, subject area, grades and teacher recommendation.

General Courses offer differential instruction in a smaller class size.

Rank in Class

Only the students in the top 10% of the senior class receive a rank. Rank is based solely on work completed at Paul VI and represents a weighted grade point average. The GPA is based on a 4.0 scale.

Graduates

From the Class of 2012, 99% are attending post-secondary educat ional institutions; of these, 84% attend four-year colleges and 15% attend two-year colleges. Since class of 2004, average percentage of students enrolled in college the first year after high school w ho returned for a second year (Freshman to Sophomore Persistence) is 97%.

Grading System

Honors Courses are weighted by adding an additional .5 quality point. AP Courses receive an additional 1.0 quality point.

Community Service

Each student is required to participate in a minimum 50 hours of meaningful service to others within the school and local community.

Special Programs

The Academic Center for Excellence program provides educational support during study hall for students who are experiencing difficulty meeting the demands of a college preparatory curriculum. Acceptance into this program is based on need and includes students with and without diagnosed, documented learning disabilities.

The DeSales Learning Center is a program that provides specialized tutorial support to average and above average students who have a mild to moderate diagnosed learning disability. The DSLC is a tutorial support/student advocacy program which has been designed to help students meet the demands of their academic course requirements. Students enrolled in this program take all core subjects in regularly scheduled classes and attend this specialized program during their study hall period.

The Options Program is a modified inclusive educational program for high school age students with developmental disabilities. Students accepted into this program have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities and no serious emotional or behavioral issues.
